Sixth graders completed an interdisciplinary activity between English and Social Studies classes. President Polk was put on trial for Unjust Land Acquisitions and Human Rights Violations. Students researched the history of Manifest Destiny. Students took on the roles of Prosecution Attorneys, Defense Attorneys, Witnesses, Paralegals, and judge.
Congratulations to the our Destination Imagination team, "The Superstitious Seven," on placing third at the state competition.
This qualifies them to participate in Global Finals this summer. According to the organizer of the 2016 Elie Wiesel Writing Competition, this is only the third time that one school has “swept” a category, in this case, the Junior Essay category, in which there were over 600 entries this year. Congratulations to the following students:
Marykate K. First Place Shannon D. Second Place Margaret I. Third Place We also had a winner in Junior Poetry Sarah L. Third place David T., Meagan G. and Joshua M. were finalists, meaning that their entries were chosen to be discussed among the judges in the final round. Plaza is proud of its hard working and creative students!!!! Plaza is always excited when have experts in the field of study come to share with our students. Recently, Congressman Scott Rigell spoke to our eighth graders about how our government works and that it is important to be aware and involved with government at all levels.
We also had the privilege of having The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater share a presentation about a Holocaust survivor who lives in the Hampton Roads area with our seventh graders. Seventh graders were time warped into the past. They conducted research to understand and embody someone from that time period. The students carried on conversations using the perspective of the individual and how they would have reacted with others.
Students selected books that they felt deserved to be purchased for the Little Free Library project that is sponsored by the MYP Seventh Grade. The library will be built at Brookwood Elementary. The students did research, created visuals which included a three dimensional piece and presented to their peers.
