Seventh grade students grappled with the question, "Should parents be allowed to design their babies using techniques such as genetic engineering?" Students researched genetic diseases, reflected on culture ideals, and the science behind genetically modified living organisms. They also looked at global sustainability and carrying capacity. Students found others who were like-minded and shared their information and answers to thought provoking questions. They then discussed their opinions in a Socratic Seminar. In the end, no easy answer to the question of designer babies was formed, but all agreed that the future generations will be dealing with this very complicated subject.
